Kiri Robbie
I havent been lucky enough to use bentonite or polymer fluids as any opputunity to use them another solution (i.e. jet grouting, permanent casing, CFA etc) is used. What is the reason for this? Are drlling fluids not as cost effective?
Martin Larisch
You would not use bentonite or polymer fluids for any other deep foundation applications than bored piles (temporary cased) and diaphragm walls. Fluids are particularly effective for large diameter bored piles where casings or the CFA method is not suitable. Sometimes drilling support fluids are the only viable method the install large diameter bored piles. Polymers are typically more cost effective than bentonite fluids but a project and site specific risk and cost analysis is required. I am sure that if you stay involved in projects which require bored piles, you will get involved in the use of drilling support fluids for temporary support of the excavation.
